Albufeira Honeymoon – the Algarve, PortugalEnjoy an exciting honeymoon holiday or romantic getaway in Albufeira at the busiest and arguably most enjoyable resort on the Algarve. With its mild climate, scenic setting, Moorish-style old town, great choice of easy-to-reach beaches, fine-dining seafood restaurants, numerous bars, nearby theme parks and wide range of accommodation options, Albufeira is a perfect honeymoon destination at any time. Things to do and seeUnwind on the town’s main beach or follow a coastal path over rocky ochre-red bluffs and through naturally sculpted rock tunnels to a string of beaches that stretch from nearby Praia da Oura to Santa Eulalia. Alternatively, hop on a local bus to visit less crowded but more distant beaches such as Praia da Falesia (to the east) or Praia da Gale (to the west), which is home to one of the Algarve’s most exclusive boutique hotels – the luxurious Estalagem Vila Joya. Away from the beach, explore the narrow and twisting alleyways lined with whitewashed houses that sprawl across the hillside above the Atlantic Ocean. Admire the remains of the ancient castle ramparts that once surrounded the city. Visit the Ermide de São Sebastião – one of the region's oldest churches – with a distinctive Manueline door, gilded altarpiece and 14th-century statue of Nossa Senhora da Oradat (the local saint). Savour panoramic views over the Old Town and across to the sea from the patio of the whitewashed, domed Igreja de Santana church. Take in a bullfight at the Praia da Oura bullring (unlike in Spain, the bull is not killed in Portugal). Enjoy a refreshing dip at nearby Aqualand, home to numerous slides, flumes and swimming pools. Or swim with dolphins at Zoo Marine, a part-zoo part-theme park located around 7km from Albufeira, where performing parrots, sea lions and dolphin shows are perfect entertainment for children. After dark, head to ‘The Strip' at Montechoro – a party zone filled with countless bars and nightclubs pumping out lively dance music until dawn. Best time to visit Albufeira?Any time is good for an Albufeira honeymoon, with little rain and lots of sunny days throughout the year. The peak travel months are July and August; these are also the hottest months of the year, with the temperature averaging 27°C and often reaching the high 30s. During peak season, advance bookings are generally necessary at the top hotels, while low season travel brings great hotel deals with savings of up to 70 per cent. Spring and autumn are splendid alternatives to a peak season summer holiday (although the water may be somewhat chilly).
