Lefkada Honeymoon, Greece
Blessed with great natural beauty, friendly villages and a string of gorgeous beaches along its west coast, Lefkada boasts all the ingredients you need for a secluded Greek Islands honeymoon or romantic getaway holiday.
Lefkada (also known as Lefkas) is the fourth-largest island in the Ionians and offers a verdant landscape of olive groves and vineyards and forests of pine and fir sprinkled with several 1000m-high mountain peaks and picturesque villages where older women still wear traditional dress.
Things to do and see
Along the less populated west coast you can discover a string of spectacular beaches. Hike to the Dimosari waterfalls and cool off with a swim in the nature-sculpted white rock pools.
In Lefkada town, discover colourful shops in Agios Spyridon square, attractive arcades along Ioannou Mela Street, interesting finds in the Archaeological Museum and spiritual glory in the majestic 17th century Church of Agios Dimitrios. Elsewhere, explore the imposing and renovated remains of 14th century Agia Maura Castle, site of the former capital.
Marvel at stunning 15th century frescoes inside the Church of Panagia Hodeghetria and see the oldest church on the island – the Agios Ioannis Antzoussis church, located just 3km from Lefkada town. Only these and a few other monuments and churches survived the devastating earthquakes of 1948 and 1953.
Don’t miss a showcase of ecclesiastic art at the Museum of Faneromeni Monastery. The collection spans from the 15th to 19th centuries and includes rare paintings from the post Byzantine period, manuscripts and antique prints.
Lefkada was once joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. Since the building of the 8th century BC canal, the 25m-wide strait across the canal is now spanned by a causeway.
