The US Virgin Islands consist of 60 mainly uninhabited islands and cays – the largest and busiest are St Thomas, St Croix and St John.
The nearby British Virgin Islands are just a short plane ride away.
Blessed with lush tree-covered hills and mountains fringed by pristine white-sand beaches, St John offers a welcome escape from the crowds of historic St Croix and bustling St Thomas.
St John is the smallest and most pristine of the three main US Virgin Islands.
Blessed with great conditions for sailing, scuba diving and game fishing, St Thomas also offers fine dining restaurants, a choice of luxurious 5-star resorts and arguably the best discounted duty-free shopping in the Caribbean.
Home to a natural deepwater harbour, St Thomas is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean and is certainly the busiest cruise ship harbour in the West Indies.
St Croix offers excellent swimming and snorkelling from a choice of white-sand beaches, as well as scuba diving and fishing.
The western shore is perfect for biking, the tropical rainforest in Christiansted is best seen while horseback riding and the Old Custom House, the wharf area and the historic Fort Christiansværn, which dates from 1774 is best enjoyed on a walking tour.
St Croix offers a choice of resorts providing free water sports as well as nightly entertainment. Try the luxurious Buccaneer, a family owned resort that faces three of St Croix’s best beaches.
Come on a day trip or stay longer at one of St John’s peaceful and honeymoon friendly resorts. Try the luxurious Westin Resort St John in Great Cruz Bay, with its giant pool, broad beach and multiple dining choices.
Or relax in the genteel and elegant Caneel Bay Resort, the Caribbean's first eco-resort, which has no phones or televisions. The resort sits on a prime 69ha portion of the national park, surrounded by lush vegetation and offering a playground of seven gorgeous white-sand beaches.
