The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok
The Mandarin Oriental hotel is one of the world’s grandest hotels and in many ways a tourist attraction in its own right. For almost 130 years, royalty, dignitaries and distinguished travellers have made the hotel, located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, an essential stopover when visiting Bangkok.
Renovated in 2006 as part of a USD75 million refurbishment, the hotel’s rooms and suites provide sumptuous comfort in either the River Wing or Garden Wing. Each has been designed with traditional Thai flair and luxuriously appointed with teak furnishings and canopied beds. The hotel offers 24 hour butler service to all 393 rooms.
It also boasts some of Bangkok’s finest restaurants: Le Normandie offers delicious French cuisine, impeccable service and wines from an exceptional cellar; or try Sala Rim Naam – housed in a richly decorated Thai pavilion, the restaurant is also the setting for one of the kingdom’s unique cultural experiences – classical Thai dancing, which is performed every night.
