Quebec Honeymoon

Experience Quebec on a honeymoon holiday: Quebec is Canada's most historic city, the only walled city in North America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where 95 per cent of its residents speak French and proudly live out their French heritage.

Things to do and see
Stroll or ride a horse-drawn carriage along the winding cobblestone streets of Vieux-Québec, lined by 17th and 18th century stone houses and churches, surrounded by graceful squares and pretty parks.

Discover the Place-Royale, a picturesque 17th century plaza, and while there, pop into the Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, the oldest stone church in Québec, built in 1688.

Take in the sights from the boardwalk of the Terrasse Dufferin, lined with green-and-white-roofed gazebos and offering views of the landmark Château Frontenac to the rear and of the great sweep of the St Lawrence River to the front, where ferries, cruise ships, Great Lakes freighters and tankers criss-cross the mighty river that gave the city its name.

Learn about the city’s history at the Musée de la Civilisation near Place-Royale and watch the colourful Changing of the Guard at La Citadelle, a fortress built by the British to repel an American invasion that never came.

Browse the riverside antique shops and bistros of the restored 18th century neighbourhood of Basse-Ville/Vieux-Port or relax with a picnic in Parc des Champs-de-Bataille, overlooking the St Lawrence River on the very site of the historic British victory over French forces in 1759. Or people watch from an outdoor café along the Grande-Allée, at Place d'Armes in Upper Town or in the Quartier du Petit-Champlain in Lower Town.

For great views of the city, take the Lévis Ferry from the Vieux-Port side, staying on board for the return trip.

For a day trip, visit the towering basilica in the village of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré, one of Canada's most famous shrines, located just 33km north of Québec City. The complex includes the church, a hillside Station of the Cross and the museum of Ste-Anne, where you can learn the legend behind the popular shrine. More than a million people visit the basilica annually.

Tour Quebec’s waterfront on a bike or head out to Ile d'Orléans, a bucolic island 15 minutes downriver from Québec City, for coastal rides past strawberry fields and through small villages lined with 18th century houses and churches. Canoeists should check out the lakes and rivers of Parc de la Jacques-Cartier or the shores of Lac Saint-Joseph.

In winter, the Parc des Champs-de-Bataille (Battlefields Park) and the Station Touristique Duchesnay offer a network of groomed cross-country trails. Downhill skiers can take the Hiver Express shuttle service to Mont Ste-Anne, which offers the largest skiing surface in eastern Canada, with 65 groomed trails that include 17 lit for night skiing.

Learn how to lead a dogsled at Station Touristique Duchesnay or explore the heart of Québec province on a hike along the majestic Saint Lawrence River, passing rolling pastures, forests and quaint villages where you can revive with delicious homemade produce.
