Mombasa is the second-largest city in Kenya, located on the Indian Ocean 487km southeast of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi and around 85km north of the Tanzanian border.

Getting to Mombasa


The most convenient route is via the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, with regular direct flights to Mombasa taking one hour. Alternatively, take the overnight sleeper from Nairobi and savour one of Africa’s classic travel experiences.

From Australia: The most convenient flights to Mombasa from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, are with Thai Airways to Bangkok connecting on Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Alternatively, take Emirates to Dubai and fly direct to Mombasa on Rwandair Express.

Flying in


Mombasa’s Moi International Airport is 13km west of the city. Taxis and public buses are available. You can also prearrange pick up by your hotel.


Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is located 16km southeast of central Nairobi. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall; fares to the city are fixed. A frequent bus service operates between the airport and the city centre, departing from outside terminals 1 and 2.

Entry requirements
A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond intended period of stay plus proof of funds to cover their extended period of stay as well as a ticket for return or onward travel. A visa is required, and can be obtained on arrival at a cost of US$50 valid for three months.

Getting around


Taxis and tuk-tuks are cheap and plentiful. Car and motorbike hire is available. Traffic drives on the left.
