The best time to visit Chiang Mai is between November and February, when the region is mainly dry and not too hot, typically averaging 28°C (82°F).
Located in the lush forested hills of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is around 680km north of the capital Bangkok.
Chiang Mai enjoys a tropical climate, with warm temperatures all year round, seasonal rainfal and three distinct seasons:
cool (warm and dry) – November to February, average 28°C (82°F);
hot (and humid) – March to May, average 35°C (95°F); and
wet – May to October, average 32°C (89°F) (August and September are the wettest months).
The cool, dry season, from November to February, is generally warm with daytime temperatures ranging from a high of 30°C (86°F) to lows of around 15°C (59°F). December and January are the coolest months. Humidity is low with almost no rain and bright sunshine averages 9 hours every day.
The hot season of March and April receives daily average highs of 35°C (95°F), and it can get hotter. Rainfall is low until May when the monsoon rains provide welcome relief to the soaring temperatures.
The rainy season, from May to October, is characterised by plenty of sunshine interspersed by heavy downpours, which are over very quickly.
Rafting is best between July and October when most rivers are swollen with monsoon rain. Both biking and trekking are best in the dry season from November to early March – but bring a sweater, as nights in northern Thailand can get pretty chilly.
High season: Peak tourist season runs from November to late March, with peaks in July and August.
Low season: Avoid the crowds and take advantage of discounted room rates during April to June, September and October.
