How to get to Goa

Goa hugs the centre of India’s western coastline facing the Arabian Sea.

Stretching across 3700 sq km, Goa is divided into two regions – North and South Goa, each with its own distinct coastal and interior areas.

The central coastal area reflects the Portuguese colonial influence with a larger Christian population, while the interior is home to a majority Hindu population.

North Goa is best known for the beaches at Arambol, Calangute, Baga, Anjuna and Vagator, while Panjim and Old Goa is renowned for wonderful colonial Portuguese architecture.

South Goa boasts a unspoiled selection of beaches at Agonda, Bogmalo, Benaulim, Colva and Om.

The most convenient route to Goa is by air to Goa International Airport (GOI), also known as Dabolim Airport.

From overseas, this usually means arriving first at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), formerly known as Sahar International Airport, followed by a connecting domestic flight to Goa.

The airport is located 4km (2.4mi) from Vasco da Gama City, 23km (14mi) from Margao and about 30km (18mi) from the state capital, Panjim.

Alternatively, there are several daily express train services from Mumbai to Goa as well as a night train – the Konkan Kanya Express (advance booking required).

Trains generally run from Mumbai (in the north) through Goa to Mangalore (in the south), with stops at Thivim (near Vagator), Karmali (near Panjim) and Madgaon (closest to the main resort strip).
