January is not the best time to visit Cairns, as it falls during the hot, rainy season.
You can expect hot and humid weather with around seven hours of sunshine daily interspersed by tropical downpours that mainly fall at night. Daytime temperatures reach an average high of 32°C (89°F) with a low of 24°C (75°F) at night.
Despite the occasional rain showers, January weather conditions are still fine for rainforest tours, white-water rafting, game fishing and diving the Great Barrier Reef.
January is considered high season in Cairns, with higher hotel rates and more visitors especially during the summer school holidays, which last all month.
Note: January falls within the so called ‘marine stinger season’. While it is rare for anyone to get badly stung, it’s probably advisable to swim on beaches with swimming enclosures; all beaches in and around Cairns have small, netted enclosures for swimming.
