October is an excellent time to visit Cairns, as it falls during the winter dry season.
You can expect pleasantly warm weather with around nine hours of sunshine daily with occasional rain showers mainly falling at night. Daytime temperatures see an average high of 29°C (84°F) with a low of 20°C (68°F) at night.
October weather conditions are great for rainforest tours, white-water rafting and are ideal for game fishing and snorkelling or diving the Great Barrier Reef.
It’s also a good time to watch minke and giant humpback whales during their annual migration south.
October sees hotel rates drop slightly as the popular winter high season draws to a close.
Note: October sees the start of the so called ‘marine stinger season’. While it is rare for anyone to get badly stung, it’s probably advisable to swim on beaches with swimming enclosures; all beaches in and around Cairns have small, netted enclosures for swimming.
