Honeymoon guide to Fitzroy Island

With a 339ha national park, a picturesque rocky foreshore indented with white-sand beaches and coral reefs almost completely surrounded the island, Fitzroy offers a perfect playground for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and bushwalking on a honeymoon or romantic getaway holiday.

Dip your toes into the powder-white sand of Nudey Beach, a picture-perfect beach framed by nature-sculpted rocks that shelve into clear water perfect for snorkelling and swimming.

Look out for clownfish, parrotfish, anemone fish, wrass and the occasional green sea turtle.

Kayak the sheltered waters of Welcome Bay, take a diving day trip the Great Barrier Reef and spot monitor lizards, skinks and pythons from trails that weave through the national park.

Enjoy 360-degree panoramic views from the island’s summit and lighthouse, which sits on the northwest point of the island overlooking Little Fitzroy Island and Cape Grafton.

From this vantage point you can easily spot humpback whales during their migration from June to August.

Where to stay

Be pampered at Fitzroy Island’s only resort, the 3-star Fitzroy Island Resort.

How to get to Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is located in the warm waters of tropical North Queensland, just 4km from the mainland and 22km east of Cairns, an easy 45-minute cruise from the Reef Fleet Terminal in Cairns.

Cairns is located on the east coast of Cape York Peninsula in Far Northern Queensland, around 1700km (1056mi) north of Brisbane.

The most convenient route to Cairns is by air to Cairns International Airport (CNS), located about 7km (4mi) north of the city centre.

From some international destinations this may require first flying into Brisbane Airport (BNE) – or Melbourne or Sydney – followed by a connecting flight to Cairns International Airport.
