How to get to Bimini

Bimini is the westernmost district of the Bahamas, a chain of islands located in the Out Islands about 80km (50mi) due east of Miami, and around 210km (130mi) west-northwest of Nassau.

Bimini comprises the larger islands of North and South Bimini, which are linked by a regular ferry service, plus a number of smaller islands and atolls. Most of Bimini is privately owned.

The most convenient route to Bimini is by air to South Bimini Airport (BIM), which receives nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale and Nassau.

By sea, you can also take a two hour ferry service from Miami (Port of Miami - Terminal H) to Bimini North Island ferry terminal, around 9km (5.5mi) from Alice Town.

Flying in

Bimini has just one airport, South Bimini Airport (BIM), located on South Bimini. Ferry boats meet arriving flights for transfer to North Bimini, where most of the resorts are located. Hotels can provide transport by prior-arrangment.


Entry requirements

All visitors must hold return/onward tickets, plus proof of sufficient funds, and with the exception of nationals of Canada and the US, all visitors must hold passports which are valid at least six months after entry.

Australian, New Zealand and UK nationals do not require a visa for a stay of up to three months.

United States and Canadian passport holders do not require a visa for travel to the Bahamas for visits not exceeding eight months; however, they must have a valid passport or a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document, or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.


Getting around

On foot mainly, however taxis are available but expensive. Bicycles and golf carts are easily rented from most resorts and are a fun way to get around. Pedestrians should remember to first look right and then left before crossing streets.

There is a daily tram service on North Bimini and ferries between North and South Bimini islands.
