Fort Fincastle, Nassau

Explore this small but impressive fort, built in 1793 by Lord Dunmore, the royal governor. The fort stands atop Bennet’s Hill and offers commanding views over the harbour.

Climb the Queen's Staircase to the battlements and examine ancient cannons then take the elevator or ascend the narrow, winding staircase to the 38m-high water tower and lighthouse; from here you can enjoy panoramic views over the harbour and beyond.

The tower was built in 1928 and is New Providence's highest point; it sits just behind the fort.

Although the fort was built to defend Nassau against a possible invasion, no shot was ever fired.
