How to get around Grenada

The best way to get around Grenada is by hire car. Local areas, such as St. George's, are best explored on foot. Taxis and minibuses are also available.

Transport options in Grenada

Grenada has a good road network, with most roads in good condition, however many are narrow and winding.

There are few road signs in Grenada, so a road map is useful when driving. Traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road.

Car hire: You can find numerous local and international car hire firms at the international airport, in the capital, St. George's and at Grand Anse Beach. It's possible to arrange for pickup at the airport and ferry dock.

To hire a car in Grenada, you need to be at least 25 years old and hold a valid driver's licence from your home country.

You'll also need to buy a local Grenadian driver’s licence – cost EC$60 – from the car hire agency or from the Central Police Station in St. George's.

During the peak season in July and August, cars must be booked for a minimum of three days.

Taxi: Taxis are an efficient way of getting around Grenada, and are easily available at the airport, in St. George's and Grand Anse, as well as most hotels.

Taxis can be found at dedicated ranks. Some taxi firms also provide a sightseeing service, such as Mandoo's Tour & Taxi Service (grenadatours.com).

Rates are fixed: the ride from St. George's to Grand Anse Beach should cost about EC$35 (about USD$13). Taxi fares on Carriacou are generally less expensive.

Minibus: Local minibuses offer a great way to get around Grenada and Carriacou from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Minibuses run from Melville Street in St. George's to destinations throughout Grenada, including Grand Anse Beach, Grenville and Gouyave.

The main destinations are posted on the front of the bus, alongside the route number; you may need to ask the conductor or driver which bus is best to get to smaller places outside St George’s and Hillsborough.

One-way fares range from EC$2.50 to EC$8 (about USD$1-$3) depending on the distance travelled.

While there are bus stops along all the major routes, you can also flag down a bus pretty much anywhere. When you're ready to get off, simply shout 'bus stop please driver.'

Bicycle: Cycling is slowly gaining popularity in Grenada. However, many roads are poorly lit and drivers are not used to encountering cyclists, so extra care is needed when getting around.

While it is possible to cycle a 100km (62mi) circuit of the island, the steep and winding road may be challenging for all but the fittest riders.

The road between Grande Anse and the airport is wide and flat and with little traffic, is a popular place for local cyclists.

The Mocha Spoke cafe (mochaspoke.com) in Point Salines and True Blue rents out bikes and also offers guided bike tours.

Sea: A scenic water-taxi service runs between St. George's and Grand Anse Beach. A small fleet of brightly coloured boats shuttle passengers along the southwest coast for around EC$10 (about USD$4 ) each way.

Osprey Lines (www.ospreylines.com) provides a regular ferry service from Grenada to Carriacou and Petit Martinique. Ferries depart from St. George's every morning at 9 a.m. and return every afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Reservations are not required, except on holidays. Tickets from Grenada are purchased on board, and from Carriacou at the office on Patterson St, Hillsborough. The Osprey arrives and departs at the east side of the Carenage in Grenada, and from the Hillsborough pier in Carriacou.

The trip takes roughly two hours and costs EC$80 (around USD$30) for one-way trip from Grenada to Carriacou; with an an extra EC$20 (around USD$7) to continue on to Petit Martinique.

There are several yacht charter firms in Granada, including Sunsail (www.sunsail.com.au/yacht-charter/caribbean/grenada) and Horizon Yacht Charters (horizonyachtcharters.com/grenada/) – two of Grenada’s largest yacht charter operators. Yachts are available for crewed and bareboat charter for those with sailing experience.

Air: SVG Air (www.grenada-flights.com) fly daily between Grenada's Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) and Carriacou's Lauriston Airport (CRU). The flight takes approximately 20 minutes.
