How to get to Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands (after Tenerife), an island archipelago comprising seven large and six smaller islands that lie in the Atlantic Ocean around 1100km off the Spanish mainland and just 100km from the northwest coast of Africa.

The most convenient route to Fuerteventura is by air to Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), also known as El Matorral Airport, located 5km (3mi) southwest of the island's capital city, Puerto del Rosario.

A frequent bus service runs from Fuerteventura Airport to Puerto del Rosario every 15 minutes, taking only 6 minutes.

Fuerteventura receives daily flights to and from the neighbouring islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as well as daily direct flights from major cities in Europe.

Flying in

Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), known as El Matorral Airport, is located 5km (3mi) southwest of the island's capital city Puerto del Rosario.


Public transport

Taxi: Taxis are available kerbside opposite the arrivals hall. It is possible to book a taxi in advance (tel: +34 928 855 432). The fare to Puerto de Rosario is around €10.

Bus: A frequent bus service operates from Fuerteventura Airport to Puerto del Rosario every 15 minutes. The fare is less than €2, and the journey time is around 20 minutes.

Local buses (tel: +34 928 850 951; www.tiadhe.com) also serve the airport, with Bus 3 running between Puerto del Rosario and Caleta de Fuste (El Castillo), and Bus 10 operating between Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable.

Buses depart from outside the terminal every 30 minutes from early morning until late in the evening from Monday to Saturday, and less frequently on Sundays.

Shuttle: Many tour operators arrange hotel transfers for their passengers. And hotels can arrange airport pick-up by prior arrangement.


Car rental

Car hire companies represented at Fuerteventura Airport include Avis, Cicar, Hertz, Payless and Top Car.


Terminal facilities

Money: A bank and various ATMs are available in the terminal building.

Food: There are two cafes – one on each floor – selling sandwiches, snacks and drinks, as well as an outlet selling ice cream and cakes.

Shopping: A few shops offer a variety of local handicrafts, gifts, books and fashion products on the first floor in departures. A duty-free shop sells spirits, chocolates, cosmetics and perfumes.

Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Fuerteventura Airport. Public payphones are also available.

Other: A VIP lounge is located in the check-in area. A photocopying service and printer is available at the Aena information desk on the ground floor.


Disabled facilities

Facilities for the disabled include reserved parking spaces, bright signalling for the visually impaired, handrails, ramps, lifts, text telephones, accessible toilets and emergency intercoms.


Entry requirements

A passport valid for at least six months beyond intended period of stay, a return/onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds. No visa is required for a stay of up to 90 days.


Getting around

Apart from walking, the best way to explore Gran Canaria is by hire car or local bus. Alternatively, taxis are usually inexpensive for short distances.
