Marvel at stunning 15th century frescoes inside the Church of Panagia Hodeghetria and see the oldest church on the island – the Agios Ioannis Antzoussis church, located just 3km from Lefkada town. Only these and a few other monuments and churches survived the devastating earthquakes of 1948 and 1953.

Don’t miss a showcase of ecclesiastic art at the Museum of Faneromeni Monastery. The collection spans from the 15th to 19th centuries and includes rare paintings from the post Byzantine period, manuscripts and antique prints.

Lefkada was once joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. Since the building of the 8th century BC canal, the 25m-wide strait across the canal is now spanned by a causeway.

Best time to honeymoon in Levkas

The best time to visit Lefkada for a beach holiday is from mid-June to early-September. The summer months of July and August are usually hot and crowded.

However, anytime from early-May to early-October is good for a range of outdoor activities. Rainfall occurs mainly from October to March.

Lefkada enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters.

Lefkada and the Ionian Islands in general escape the heat found in mainland Greece and the strong Meltemi wind that blows across the Aegean Islands. Consequently, the sea is warmer. Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a bridge.
