How to get to Madeira

Madeira is an island archipelago situated in the north Atlantic Ocean, about 400km (250mi) north of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, around 850km (528mi) southwest of Portugal, and 565km (351mi) west of the African coastline.

The archipelago includes Madeira, Porto Santo, the Desertas, and the Savage Islands.

The most convenient route to Madeira is by air to Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo Airport (FNC), more commonly known as Funchal Airport, located about 16km (10mi) northeast of the capital, Funchal.

Funchal is also a favourite stopover of cruise liners. A ferry runs from Porto Santo to Funchal, taking 10 hours, daily.

Public transport

Taxi: Metered taxis can be hailed outside Arrivals. A minimum fare of €4 is in place from the airport. For more information, contact AITRAM Taxi (tel: 291 765 760).

Bus: SAM (tel: 291 201 151; www.sam.pt) buses run hourly (with some variations) between Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo Airport and Funchal city centre, taking about 25 minutes. The fare is €3.25.

The Airport Express bus to Praia Formosa takes 45 minutes and costs €5.


Car rental

A selection of car hire agencies at Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo Airport, include Avis, Guerin, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and Rodavante.


Terminal facilities

Money: A bank, currency exchange office and several ATMs are available in the terminal building.

Food: There are several cafés, bars and restaurants on each level of the terminal building.

Shopping: A large shopping area offers regional handicraft and flower shops, as well as news stands in the public areas on the ground and first floors. In the departure area, Madeira embroidery and handmade leather products can be bought, alongside duty-free items and souvenirs.

Wi-Fi: Wireless internet access is available in certain ‘hotspot’ areas of the terminal building, with the first 30 minutes free of charge. Public telephones are located at various points. A post office is located on level 1.

Other: Facilities include a medical centre (tel: 291 520 769) on level 1, baby change facilities, a hairdresser's on level 1 and two VIP rooms: one on the ground floor and another on the first floor.


Disabled facilities

Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo Airport offers good accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility, with ramps and lifts where needed, as well as toilets and reserved parking for disabled passengers.


Entry requirements

A passport valid for at least six months beyond intended period of stay, a return/onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds. No visa is required for a stay of up to 90 days.
