The best time to visit Santorini is during mid-season (May, June, September and October) when the weather is warm and the island is less crowded.
The peak season of July and August is beautiful with hot, sunny weather but comes at a cost of sky-rocketing prices in hotels and restaurants.
Santorini enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long, hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Despite winter rainfall, Santorini is considered a year-round destination
Peak season generally runs from July to August and is best avoided due to temperatures often exceeding 38°C (100°F); and to the fact that Santorini – together with the major Greek islands – is swamped with European holidaymakers.
Summer, from June to September, enjoys daily averages of 29°C (84°F) peaking around 35°C (95°F) on occasions. You can expect average highs of 27°C (81°F) in June, 29°C (84°F) in July and August and 26°C (79°F) in September.
Cooling sea breezes are fairly consistent throughout summer. Sea temperatures peak around 25°C (77°F) in August.
Autumn sees an average high of 23°C (73°F) in October and 19°C (66°F) in November.
Spring temperatures average a high of 16°C (61°F) in March, 18°C (64°F) in April and 23°C (73°F) in May.
Winter averages 12°C (53°F) from December to February, with January the coldest month with a high of 14°C (57°F) and a low of 10°C (50°F).
December and January are the wettest months, with light showers during spring and autumn. It’s pretty quiet on Santorini during winter as ferry services depart less frequently and many bars and restaurants close for the low season.
High season: July and August, when hotel and restaurant prices sky-rocket.
Low season: From March to June and from September to October – the temperature is cooler, hotel prices are more reasonable and the crowds non-existent.
Note: The winter off-season, from November through February, is generally quiet everywhere; many hotels, restaurants and bars close down and the beaches are deserted. Ferry and air services are dramatically reduced.
