Where is Tenerife . . .


Tenerife is the largest and most visited island in the Canary Islands (or Islas Canarias), an island archipelago comprising seven large and six smaller islands that sit in the Atlantic Ocean around 1100km from the Spanish mainland and just 100km from the northwest coast of Africa.

Getting to Tenerife


By air, Tenerife South Airport receives daily international flights from major cities in Europe and Spain. Interisland flights use the smaller Tenerife North Airport (previously known as Los Rodeos airport).

By sea there are frequent interisland ferry, hydrofoil and jetfoil services to all the Canary Islands.

From Australia: The most convenient and quickest flights are on Thai Airways via Bangkok and Madrid or Emirates via Dubai and Madrid.

From New Zealand: The most convenient flights are on Air New Zealand to Los Angeles connecting with Iberia to Madrid.

From the UK: Monarch Airlines, Thomas Cook, EasyJet and Thomson offer a choice of direct flights to Tenerife from London Gatwick. Ryan Air also offers direct flights from London Stansted. British Airways and Iberia offer daily direct flights from Heathrow to Madrid.

From the USA: A huge choice of airlines fly from New York Kennedy and Newark to Madrid and Barcelona with connecting flights. The most convenient flights from Los Angeles are via Madrid on Iberia.

Flying in
Tenerife South Airport (previously known as Tenerife South-Reina Sofia Airport) is located 18km east of Playa de las Américas. A frequent bus service runs between the airport and the city centre as well as to all the major towns. Taxis and hire cars are also available.

Madrid-Barajas Airport is located 9km from the city's financial district and 13km northeast of the Puerta del Sol, Madrid's historic centre. The airport has a rail link to the city centre.

Entry requirements 
A passport valid for at least six months beyond intended period of stay, a return/onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds. No visa is required for a stay of up to 90 days.

Getting around
Apart from walking, the best way to explore Gran Canaria is by hire car or local bus. Alternatively, taxis are generally inexpensive for short distances.
