Introducing Nohoch Nah Chich
Join a four-wheel drive adventure tour through the Mexican rainforest to the Mayan community of Rancho San Felipe. From here explore the Sistema Nohoch Nah Chich, an extensive water filled cave system considered to be the second-longest underground river system in the world.
Snorkel through the crystal clear water past thick strands of stalagmites and stalactites. Or follow a choice of several dive lines that run deep beneath the surface taking you past delicate white and impressive geological formations.
Scuba diving at Nohoch Nah Chich (Mayan for ‘Giant Bird Cage’) is for experienced divers only – possibly the experience of a lifetime for diving enthusiasts.
The cave system, which stretches 8km inland from the coast, has been extensively explored by dedicated cave divers since 1987 and now has a recorded length of 67km connecting 36 cenotes.
The average depth in the cave system is 7.6m, while the maximum depth is around 71m in ‘The Blue Abyss’.
Nohoch Nah Chich is easily reached on a day trip from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. After arriving at the ranch site, you follow a 2km-long trail to the cenote entrance, about an hours walk.
Several adventure tour operators offer certified guided dive tours to this cenote and others in the region, which can be organised through your hotel.
Location: 4.6km south of Dos Ojos, 16.5km south of Akumal
