Kayaking the Yasawa Islands

Kayak Fiji’s stunning Yasawa Islands – a string of 20 pristine tropical islands in Fiji's remote north-west.

Paddle in warm tropical currents past limestone caves, snorkel above colourful coral reefs and camp on palm-fringed, white-sand beaches on uninhabited islands.

Spend a couple of nights as honoured guests in a traditional Fijian village and experience Fijian hospitality with singing, dancing and a kava ceremony.

Rating – Easy to moderate.

Time frame – From five to eight days.

Accommodation – Mainly beach camping or stay instead at one of several luxurious 5-star resorts, such as the exclusive Turtle Island Resort.

Best time – During the dry season from May to October, with an average temperature of 26°C (78°F).

Other activities – Stretching for almost 90km (56mi) north-west of Viti Levu, Fiji, the Yasawa Islands epitomise the idyllic image of the South Pacific.

Less developed that the Mamanucas, the Yasawa Island group comprises more than 20 sun-kissed islands edged with luxurious 5-star resorts and countless soft white-sand beaches that gently shelve into tranquil reef-fringed lagoons – perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving.

The Yasawa Islands feature rugged peaks and hilly grassland, perfect for scenic walks or horseback riding along coastal ridges – the vista from the southern summit of Naviti Island to the southern Yasawa Islands is one of the most photogenic views in Fiji.

Duck dive into the dark and mystical limestone caverns of Sawa-i-Lau Island, which featured in the movie Blue Lagoon, starring Brooke Shields; or swim alongside manta rays as they glide through the warm waters surrounding Naviti Island.
