Auckland Airport (AKL) is located 21km (13mi) south of Auckland city centre.


Transfer between terminals

A free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes between the terminals from 05:00am to 10:30pm. Alternatively, passengers may walk between the terminals, which takes about 10 minutes.


Public transport

Taxi: Taxi ranks are situated outside the International Arrivals Terminal, and the Domestic Terminal. Journey time to central Auckland is about 30 minutes, costing around NZ$75 — NZ$95.

Shuttle: Shared-ride Super Shuttle buses (tel: +64 9 522 5100; www.supershuttle.co.nz) depart from shuttle ranks outside the International and Domestic Terminals. Journey time to Auckland city centre is around 35 minutes.

Bus: A dedicated SkyBus service (tel: 0800 SKYBUS or +64 9222 0084; www.skybus.co.nz) operates from the airport to the city centre every 10 minutes during peak times (07:00am – 07:00pm) taking around 60 minutes, and costs NZ$18 for a single ticket.

Bus connections are also available to Manukau city centre and other regional destinations.

Shuttle buses also offer transportation between the airport and city or suburbs on a 'shared ride' basis.


Car rental

Car hire companies at Auckland Airport include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.

Counters are located in Arrivals on the ground floor in the International Terminal.

For domestic passengers, desks are situated on the ground floor of the multi-level car park immediately opposite Domestic Arrivals.


Terminal facilities

Money: Bureau de change facilities and ATMS can be found in both terminals.

Food: There are numerous restaurants, fast-food outlets, cafés and bars at the airport, most of which are spread throughout the International Terminal.

Shopping: Most of the shops located at Auckland Airport are found on the first floor of the International Terminal. These include duty-free and specialist shops selling gifts, watches and confectionery.

Duty-free items can also be bought online in advance for collection at the airport.

The Domestic Terminal has a limited selection of newsagents and clothing accessory retailers.

Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Auckland Airport (free for the first 2 hours).

Coin-, phone card- and credit card-operated telephones can be found throughout the airport.

There are various post boxes within the terminals and stamps can be purchased from the on-site newsagents or the duty-free collection point in the International Terminal.

Other: Other facilities at Auckland Airport include free showers, first aid assistance, a medical centre, a non-denominational chapel and a Muslim prayer mat areas (1st floor, domestic and international terminals).

Nurseries are available for those with children. Passengers with some time to spare can head to the airport observation area on Puhinui Road or play a round of mini golf on a nearby course.


Disabled facilities

Facilities for disabled passengers include automatic doors, lifts, accessible toilets and showers, as well as ATMs with Braille keys.

Wheelchair assistance is available from the help desks on the ground floor. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should also inform their airline prior to travel.

There are also disabled parking spaces in front of the terminals and in the airport car parks.

Entry requirements

A passport valid for at least one month beyond intended period of stay as well as a ticket for return or onward travel and proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses while in the country.

No visa is required for stays of up to three months for US, Canadian, Irish and South African citizens. UK citizens do not need a visa for a stay of up to six months. Australian citizens do not need a visa and may stay indefinitely.


Getting around Auckland

The city offers a good intracity bus service that shuttles around all the major landmarks and neighbourhoods; a 1-day Discover Pass and a Bus About Pass are available for unlimited travel.

In addition, the double-decker Auckland Explorer Bus visits 14 major Auckland attractions departing from the Sky Tower or the Ferry Building on Quay Street every half-hour from 9am to 5pm daily in summer and 10am to 5pm in winter.

Taxis are available by phone, at taxi-stands and can be flagged down on the street.
