The island of Oahu is home to Hawaii’s capital city of Honolulu, and is located in the Pacific Ocean, around 3860km from mainland USA.

Getting to Oahu


Most north American and many international carriers fly direct to Honolulu International Airport.

From Australia: The most convenient flights are on Qantas, Hawaiian Air, JetStar or Strategic Airlines to Honolulu International Airport.

New Zealand: The most convenient direct flights are on Air New Zealand to Honolulu International Airport.

From the UK: British Airways and United Airlines offer daily flights to Los Angeles with connecting flights to Honolulu. Or you can fly Virgin Atlantic to San Francisco connecting to Honolulu on Continental.

From the USA: American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Continental and Hawain Air all offer direct daily flights from Los Angeles. United Airlines, Virgin America, JetBlue and American Airlines offer flights from New York Kennedy to Los Angeles; while Continental flies from Newark.

Flying in


Honolulu International Airport is located on the south shore of Oahu, around 13km northwest of Honolulu. Taxis and hire cars are available at the airport. You can also take the Airport Waikiki Express shuttle bus, which offers a 24-hour service in air-conditioned vans for just USD9 from the airport to Waikiki. Or, cheaper still, you can take TheBus to Waikiki for just USD2.

Entry requirements


A machine-readable passport valid for at least six months beyond intended period of stay as well as a ticket for return or onward travel. Under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), nationals of Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days.

Getting around


On land – It's best to hire a car, easily available from the airport. Traffic drives on the right. Taxis and buses are also available.

Between islands – Hawaiian Airlines provides frequent inter-island flights, usually daily. Ferries link all the main islands with frequent services between Lana’i, O'ahu, Maui, Kauai'i and the Big Island.
