How to get to Cancun

Located on the tip of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, Cancun receives direct flights from London and several cities in the United States, including New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Dallas/Ft. Worth. AeroMéxico and Mexicana fly daily from Mexico City to Cancun.

Getting to Cancun

The megaresort of Cancun is a skinny 24km island in the shape of the number ‘7’ attached to the mainland by two bridges and separated from it by the lush Nichupté lagoon.

South of Cancun lies the Riviera Maya, home to some of the hippest beaches on the coast including the chic Playa del Carmen and the gorgeous Tulum beach, which nestles beneath an ancient Mayan fortress.

From Australia: The most convenient 1-stop flights are on Qantas to Dallas/Ft. Worth with connecting flights to Cancun on American Airlines; on Qantas to Los Angeles with connecting flights to Cancun on Delta Air Lines; or V Australia to Los Angeles with connecting flights on United to Cancun.

From New Zealand: The most convenient 1-stop flights are on Air New Zealand or Qantas to Los Angeles with connecting flights on United to Cancun.

From the UK: The quickest and most convenient direct flights to Cancun are from London Gatwick on British Airways or Thomas Cook. Flights from London Heathrow take longer and involve a brief layover stop.

From the USA: American Airlines and Jet Blue offer daily direct flight to Cancun from New York. Delta, United and Virgin America fly direct to Cancun from Los Angeles.

Flying in

Cancun International Airport is located 17km southwest of the resort town. Hotels provide pre-arranged transport for guests. Official pre-paid taxis are available for booking just after the arrivals hall.

Entry requirements

A passport valid for at least six months beyond intended period of stay, a return/onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds. A visa is not required for a stay of up to 180 days.

Getting around

Apart from walking, taxis are plentiful and charge per hotel zone – taxi rates should be posted outside your hotel. Hire cars and scooters are easily rented.

The Playa Express bus offers shuttle services every 30 minutes along the coast as far as Tulum, stopping at big towns and points of interest along the way. Several boats ply the route from Cancun to nearby Isla Mujeres.
