How to get to the Bahamas

The Bahamas comprise a chain of more than 700 islands (of which less than 30 are inhabited) and 2000 cays (small isles) that stretch for 96km across the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Florida.

There are several options in flying into the Bahamas, depending on your final destination.

The most convenient route to the Bahamas is by air to Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS), located 16km (10mi) west of Nassau on New Providence Island.

By air, Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) is just a 55-minute flight from Miami.

In addition, the islands of Grand Bahama, Abacos, Eleuthera and the Exumas have direct flight connections from both Miami and Nassau.

The Bahamas are also a popular cruising ground, with cruise ships making frequent stops at Nassau and Grand Bahama – mainly from Florida.

Discovery Cruise Line runs a daily ferry service between Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Freeport, Grand Bahama.

Flying in

Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS), formerly Nassau International Airport, is located 16km (10mi) west of Nassau, and is the Bahamas’ oldest and largest airport.

Both the international and domestic terminals are within walking distance of each other.


Public transport

Taxi: Taxis are the only form of public transport to serve Nassau Lynden Pindling International Airport. Fares are charged by zone and start at around US$27 to central Nassau, with the journey time about 30 minutes.

Note: Make sure to confirm with the driver whether your ride is flat rate or metered before entering the vehicle.

Shuttle: Some hotels and resorts provide courtesy shuttle buses by prior arrangement.

Car rental

Car hire companies at Nassau Lynden Pindling International Airport, include Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty and Hertz. Offices are located within the Arrivals Terminal.


Terminal facilities

Money: Both terminals have ATMs offering either US or Bahamian Dollars. Additionally, there is a bank in the International Arrivals Terminal.

Food: There is a choice of several bars, fast-food outlets and café/restaurants at Lynden Pindling International Airport. These are mainly located within the food court in the US Departures Terminal.

Shopping: Lynden Pindling International Airport hosts shops selling music, clothes and souvenirs. There is also a newsagent. Duty-free shopping is available in the US Departures Terminal.

Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Lynden Pindling International Airport. Internet stations and public telephone booths are available in both terminals. A post office is located in the International Arrivals Terminal, and an additional post box can be found in US Departures.


Disabled facilities

Lynden Pindling International Airport is fully accessible to disabled travellers. There are ramps, adapted toilets, lifts and dedicated parking spaces inside or outside the terminals.

Passengers requiring assistance should inform their airline before travelling.


Entry requirements

All visitors must hold return/onward tickets, plus proof of sufficient funds, and with the exception of nationals of Canada and the US, all visitors must hold passports which are valid at least six months after entry.

Australian, New Zealand and UK nationals do not require a visa for a stay of up to three months.

United States and Canadian passport holders do not require a visa for travel to the Bahamas for visits not exceeding eight months; however, they must have a valid passport or a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document, or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.


Getting around

Land – Hire cars and taxis are available in Nassau, Freeport and the Outer Islands. Private mini-buses are available only on Nassau and Freeport. Golf carts can be rented on the smaller islands and cays. Bicycles are also easily rented from most resorts and are a fun way to see the smaller islands.

Between islands – Interisland air travel is centered on Nassau. Bahamasair offers frequent flights to all the islands and is the most convenient and quickest way to travel within the Bahamas.

By ferry, Bahamas Ferries operate high speed ferries linking Nassau to Andros, Abacos, Eleuthra and the Exumas. Water taxis connect Nassau and Paradise Island. Offshore islands are also serviced by private air and water taxis.
