How to get to the Bahamas

The Bahamas comprise a chain of more than 700 islands (of which less than 30 are inhabited) and 2000 cays (small isles) that stretch for 96km across the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Florida.

By air, Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport is just a 55-minute flight from Miami and less than 3 hours from New York.

Getting to the Bahamas

There are several options in getting to the Bahamas. The two main international airports are Lynden Pindling International Airport on New Providence Island and Grand Bahama International Airport on Grand Bahama Island.

In addition, the islands of Abacos, Eleuthera and the Exumas have direct flight connections from Miami International Airport and Nassau.

The Bahamas are also a popular cruising ground, with cruise ships making frequent stops at Nassau and Grand Bahama – most from Florida. A ferry – Discovery Cruise Line – runs daily between Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Freeport, Grand Bahama.

From Australia and New Zealand: The most convenient flights are with Qantas, Air New Zealand or V Australia to the USA, with connecting one- to two-stop flights via Los Angeles, Dallas and Miami.

From the UK: British Airways operates direct flights from London Heathrow to Nassau as well as connecting flights from all major UK airports. Delta, US Airways and Continental operate services from London Gatwick and Manchester as well as other cities such as Glasgow, Belfast, Edinburgh and Birmingham.

From the USA: US carriers including American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Jetblue and US Airways operate daily direct flights to Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau and Grand Bahama International Airport in Freeport from all the major US cities.

In addition, American Eagle operates from Miami to the Abacos, Eleuthera and the Exumas; US Airways flies nonstop daily from Fort Lauderdale to Eleuthera; and US Airways flies every day from West Palm Beach to the Abacos, stopping in both Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbour.
