Balmy and warm all year round, anytime of year is a good time to visit Hawaii.
However, for guaranteed dry and sunny conditions it’s probably best to visit during summer from June to October when the average temperature is 27°C (81°F), with an average high of 31°C (88°F) in August and September.
The hottest months are August and September, when temperatures may reach 32°C (90°F).
Although technically hosting two seasons, Hawaii is an all-season destination with long hours of sunshine and mild year-round balmy temperatures averaging 26°C (79°F) at sea level. Higher ‘upcountry’ elevations are cooler with sometime misty conditions.
The rainy season lasts from December to March, when you can expect slightly cooler temperatures and heavy rain in the mountains and short showers elsewhere.
Winter has an average temperature of 22°C (72°F) and an average daytime high of 26°C (79°F).
For calm water conditions perfect for swimming, snorkeling and diving, arrive in summer otherwise enjoy the crashing surf, which typically lasts from October to April.
Note: Hawaii is full of microclimates, given its many valleys, mountain peaks and coastal plains. The leeward sides (west and south coasts) of each island are usually hot and dry, while the windward sides (east and north coasts) are generally cooler and wet.
Beach tips: For year-round sun, head to Waikiki Beach and the Ko Olina coast on Oahu, the Kona-Kohala Coast on the Big Island, the south (Kihei/Wailea) and west (Lahaina/Kapalua) coasts on Maui and Poipu Beach and the southwest coast on Kauai.
High season: From mid-December through March or mid-April – expect to pay top dollar for accommodations, car rentals, and airfare.
Low season: For the best hotel rates and airfares, visit in spring from mid-April to mid-June and during autumn from September to mid-December.
Note: The last week in April and early May coincide with three major Japanese holidays.
