How to get to the Canary Island

The Canary Islands (Islas Canarias) are a Spanish archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean just 100km (62mi) from the northwest coast of Africa, and around 1100km (683mi) off the Spanish mainland.

Also known informally as the Canaries, the Canary Islands comprise seven main islands, (from large to small in size) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro; plus many smaller islands and islets.

The Canary Islands have eight airports altogether, with the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma receiving daily direct flights from Spain, Europe and North Africa, as well as connecting flights from Asia, Australasia and North America. The smaller islands receive daily flights from Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The most convenient route to the Canary Islands is by air to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), also known as Gando Airport and Gran Canaria - Las Palmas Airport.

The airport is located in the eastern region of Gran Canaria Island on the Bay of Gando (Bahía de Gando), 19km (12mi) to the south of the capital, Las Palmas, and 32km (16mi) north of the popular tourist areas of Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés on the south coast.

Alternatively, you can fly into Tenerife South Airport (TFS), which is located around 62km (38mi) from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and around 15km (9mi) from Playa de las Americas. More about getting to Tenerife

By sea, the Canary Islands are well serviced by fast hydrofoil and jetfoil as well as interisland ferries and cruise ships, which mainly stop at Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Arrecife on Lanzarote.

Entry requirements

A passport valid for at least six months beyond intended period of stay, a return/onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds. No visa is required for a stay of up to 90 days.

Getting around

The best way to get around the individual islands is to hire a car. The archipelago's many winding roads are generally in excellent condition. Cars can be hired at any of the airports as well as in the larger towns and from resorts.

The islands' are also excellent for cycling. Alternatively, each island operates a useful bus network to all the major towns and attractions. Taxis are generally inexpensive and are best for short distances only.

A fleet of fast ferries are good for hopping between adjacent islands, although flying is quicker.
